Weekly News — 5 July 2026

Summer beckons us on.  For those of us tethered to the school and academic year, July both whips us into activity and also teases us with the prospect - “soon but not yet” - of days when the tools are downed, and the options for doing less rest before us when we awake.

I am probably not the only one therefore casting my mind both forwards and back, recalling the opportunities in the summertime to journey afresh, to explore new things, and gain a sense of re-connection in ourselves.

Our image this week is of one of the Santiago de Compostela camino shells, at a beautifully modest church in the hills above Hondarribia near San Sebastian in the Basque country.  The shell of course is the symbol of St James, who is - aptly with this musing - a July boy / saint (25 July).

Another July boy…

On Sunday 5 July, Nick marks both his 70th birthday and 40 years of service at St Barnabas. We might like to think of where we each were in that year, 1986!

We have a Bring and Share lunch party in his honour straight after the 10.30 Mass this Sun 5 July. Bring yourselves! I look forward to seeing you then.

Mass also at 8am and Choral Evensong at 6pm.  A feast!

Pitshanger Pictures - Ealing Cinema Night

“The Blue Lamp” (84 mins) was a trend-setting police procedural the likes of which we are all very familiar with today. It introduced Dixon of Dock Green (Jack Warner) the character who went on to appear weekly in many of our homes from 1955 to 1976, 22 series. A particularly clever feat as in the film Dixon is killed in the first half hour or so!

The second film is “No Limit” (70 mins). This film stars George Formby and was made in 1936 by Associated Talking Pictures, the parent company of Ealing Studios. He plays the part of a chimney sweep aspiring to become a TT Motorcycle racer on the Isle of Man. It’s a comedy. The film is also shown every year at the TT races!

Donations for Food Pantry

Please consider donating items from the list in church. Donations may be left after church on Sundays or during Food Pantry hours on Wednesdays. If you would like to give a monetary donation specifically to the food pantry, please mark your green envelope ‘Food Pantry’, or use this link.

Small amounts of fresh produce can be accepted ONLY when the Pantry is open on Wednesdays.
