Weekly News — 24 May 2026

This Sunday Pentecost arrives! The season of Easter concludes, not with a whimper but many shouts of joy.  Mother Valerie will preach and we will be attentive to the spreading of the actions of the Holy Spirit wherever we go. The service will conclude with a blessing of light as we all carry the light of the Easter candle with us and go out into the world to share it.  We won’t rush off too soon, though, as Mother Valerie invites us to sparkling and other drinks to celebrate her 80th birthday this week.  Do stay and raise a glass to her!

Our 10 young people were admitted to holy communion last week and William to baptism, as the church was filled with almost 200 people.  It was a real joy and privilege to be part of this - thanks in particular to Felicity for organising and encouraging these young people and their families.

The assembled members of the Electoral Roll elected new churchwardens (John Newbegin and Jean Norman), said thank you to Anna Coleman as she stands down from the Treasurer role, elected Richard Jones and Bella Sanders to the PCC and Helen Munn-Smith, Tim Hart and Ellen Coleman as our Deanery Synods reps.  The mood was similarly festive - we all send our thanks to those who serve this community so that we might serve God more widely.

Church Finances - what does St Barnabas mean to you? Please do look at the St Barnabas church finance posters on the display boards. Three key points:

1. Expected deficit in 2026 £19,501.

2. Please join the Parish Giving Scheme (PGS) with regular monthly donations.

3. If already donating monthly, please increase your donation by 3.5% if you can.

Candle wax recycling

Richard from recycledwax.co.uk came on Sunday to collect our old paschal candles!

Old candles from homes, restaurants and churches are collected by Recycled Wax and remade by hand into new candles, keeping wax out of landfill.

Browse their collection online, and buy back the wax we have donated!

Please consider donating items from the list in church. Donations may be left after church on Sundays or during Food Pantry hours on Wednesdays. If you would like to give a monetary donation specifically to the food pantry, please mark your green envelope ‘Food Pantry’, or use this link.

Small amounts of fresh produce can be accepted ONLY when the Pantry is open on Wednesdays.
