Every Thursday morning, the idealistic Dr Alec Harvey catches the train at the Milford railway station to the local hospital--while, every Thursday morning--the middle-class British housewife, Laura Jesson, takes the train to the nearby town of Milford to shop and go to the pictures. In the following weeks, even though they are both married with children, Laura and Alec will seek each other's company over a cup of tea at the railway station's cafeteria; nevertheless, they both know that their intoxicating love affair can only be ephemeral. Can the clandestine lovers find the courage to claim back their innocence, and above all, their happiness?
