Ian Humphries (violin) was born and brought up in Ealing. He studied at Cambridge University and the Royal College of Music. He was a finalist in the Lasserson violin competition when in his teens. Since 1992 he has led the Smith Quartet, which has an international reputation in the performance of the contemporary string quartet repertoire, having premiered over 100 new works. The quartet has toured throughout the world, and broadcast regularly and produced several CDs. They performed in the BBC film on the Holocaust from Auschwitz which won an Emmy and BAFTA award for the best arts documentary.
Hugh Mather (piano) studied the piano and organ from an early age, gaining the FRCO diploma and ARCM piano performers diploma. He continued his piano studies with James Gibb at the Guildhall School of Music. He pursued a medical career and was Consultant Physician at Ealing Hospital from 1982 to 2006. He has now retired to concentrate on his musical activities. He has given many concerts in West London and elsewhere as concerto soloist, recitalist and chamber musician. He is Chairman of the Friends of St Mary's Perivale.
