Hugh Mather studied the piano and organ from an early age, gaining the FRCO and the ARCM piano performers diplomas. He then pursued a medical career and was Consultant Physician at Ealing Hospital from 1982 to 2006, specializing in diabetes, before retiring to pursue his musical interests. He continued his piano studies with James Gibb for many years. He has given countless concerts in West London and elsewhere, as soloist, accompanist and chamber musician. He has performed concerti by Mozart, Beethoven, Mendelssohn, Chopin, Schumann, Brahms, Grieg and Gershwin, with various orchestras including the West London Sinfonia, Ealing Symphony Orchestra, Richmond Orchestra, Kew Sinfonia, Trinity Orchestra (Harrow), Stroud Orchestra and the Colchester Philharmonic Orchestra. He has performed both Brahms piano concerti and Beethoven's Hammerklavier sonata here at St Barnabas, in the past two years.
Whilst a consultant at Ealing Hospital, he organised weekly lunchtime concerts at Ealing Hospital for over 20 years, to provide performing opportunities to musicians. He has developed this work enormously since his retirement. He is Chairman of the Friends of St Mary's Perivale (www.st-marys-perivale.org.uk). Together with the concerts at St Barnabas, he has arranged about 300 concerts in Ealing within the past 3 years. These have included include weekend ‘marathon' events comprising Beethoven piano sonatas (32 pianists), Chopin piano music (38 pianists), Haydn sonatas (23 pianists), Mozart sonatas (18 pianists) and Schumann's music (47 musicians). Full details of concerts are available on www.st-marys-perivale.org.uk or on www.barnabites.org/concerts.htm , and can be emailed to anyone writing to him on hmather@btopenworld.com
